Ice Dance Tempo & BPM Guide
Understanding tempo requirements for Rhythm Dance, Pattern Dance, Free Dance and Solo Ice Dance around the world.
Current season: 2026/27
Why Ice Dance is different
Unlike most figure skating disciplines, Ice Dance can have specific music tempo requirements.
For some Pattern Dances and parts of Rhythm Dance, it is not enough for the music simply to be the correct length.
The music may also need to:
- have a particular rhythm
- use a particular time signature
- remain at a constant tempo
- fall within a particular BPM range
- or meet a minimum BPM
This depends on the skating level, the type of dance, the season, and whether the competition is international or domestic.
The important thing is the actual tempo of the music. A BPM number written into an MP3 or WAV file does not itself prove that the music complies with the skating rule.
What does BPM mean?
BPM means Beats Per Minute. It describes how quickly the beat of the music is moving.
Ice Dance rules sometimes describe tempo using:
- beats per minute
- measures per minute
- time signature
- rhythm
These are related but are not always the same thing.
For example, 54 three-beat measures per minute equals 162 beats per minute, because 54 × 3 = 162. That is how the current Junior Westminster Waltz requirement is expressed by the ISU.
Ice Dance BPM is not one number for the whole sport
Depending on the event, the rule might mean:
- an exact tempo range for a Pattern Dance
- a minimum tempo for one section of a Rhythm Dance
- no fixed BPM at all for Free Dance
- a national requirement for a domestic category
Always check the specific season, level and segment.
2026/27 Junior & Senior Rhythm Dance
Source: ISU Communication No. 2795 · Updated 14 July 2026
Theme: Rhythm and Waltz. Any style of Waltz may be used, from traditional to modern interpretations. The Waltz section must be in 3/4 or 6/8. The program must also include at least one additional rhythm, tempo or dance style — so the entire Rhythm Dance does not have to stay at one BPM.
Junior Rhythm Dance
Pattern Dance Element: Westminster Waltz
Minimum 162 BPM or faster
54 three-beat measures per minute = 162 BPM
Time signature: 3/4 or 6/8
Constant tempo during the required Westminster Waltz section
Program length: 2:50 ±10 seconds
This is a minimum. It is not 162 BPM ±2 or ±3.
Senior Rhythm Dance
Pattern Dance Element: Golden Waltz
Minimum 186 BPM or faster
62 three-beat measures per minute = 186 BPM
Time signature: 3/4 or 6/8
Consistent tempo during the required Golden Waltz section
Program length: 2:50 ±10 seconds
This is a minimum. Do not invent a ± tolerance.
International Novice Ice Dance — 2026/27
Source: ISU Communication No. 2794 · Updated 14 July 2026
For 2026/27, couples provide their own music for all International Novice Pattern Dances. Music must match the required rhythm, maintain constant tempo through the required sequences, and meet the prescribed tempo range.
Junior / Senior Rhythm Dance
Minimum tempo
Junior: minimum 162 BPM · Senior: minimum 186 BPM
International Novice Pattern Dance
Narrow BPM range
Example: Foxtrot 98–102 BPM
Do not apply Novice ±2 / ±3 tolerance logic to Junior/Senior Rhythm Dance.
| Level | Dance | Rhythm | Time | Official tempo | Allowed range |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic Novice | Willow Waltz | Waltz | 3/4 | 135 BPM ±3 | 132–138 BPM |
| Basic Novice | Hickory Hoedown | Country Western / Hoedown | 4/4 | 104 BPM ±2 | 102–106 BPM |
| Basic Novice | Tango Fiesta | Tango | 4/4 | 108 BPM ±2 | 106–110 BPM |
| Intermediate Novice | Fourteenstep | March | 6/8 or 2/4 | 112 BPM ±2 | 110–114 BPM |
| Intermediate Novice | Foxtrot | Foxtrot | 4/4 | 100 BPM ±2 | 98–102 BPM |
| Intermediate Novice | American Waltz | Waltz | 3/4 | 198 BPM ±3 | 195–201 BPM |
| Advanced Novice | Paso Doble Plus | Paso Doble | 2/4 | 112 BPM ±2 | 110–114 BPM |
| Advanced Novice | Blues | Blues | 4/4 | 88 BPM ±2 | 86–90 BPM |
Does Free Dance have a required BPM?
Fixed BPM required: No
Tempo changes required: Yes
Current ISU rules do not specify one universal BPM for Junior or Senior Free Dance. That does not mean there are no music rules.
Free Dance music must include at least one change of tempo/rhythm and expression, remain suitable for Ice Dance, and comply with applicable music requirements.
- Junior Free Dance: 3:30 ±10 seconds
- Senior Free Dance: 4:00 ±10 seconds
Do not treat this as “any music is acceptable.”
Pattern Dance
Pattern Dance is where tempo becomes particularly important. Pattern Dances are performed to a defined rhythm at a constant tempo. When competitors provide their own music, it must comply with the tempo specified for that dance.
The ISU Referee can time the music and apply a deduction where a required tempo is not met. An ADEPIC track should only be described as a Pattern Dance tempo match when its relevant section has been verified.
Solo Ice Dance
Do not automatically assume partnered Ice Dance and Solo Ice Dance have identical competition structures. International Solo Ice Dance has its own General Rules, Technical Rules and Scale of Values.
Named dances often retain the same prescribed musical tempo (for example Willow Waltz 135 BPM ±3, Foxtrot 100 BPM ±2, Junior Westminster Waltz section minimum 162 BPM). Solo competition selections and required patterns can still differ — always source Solo rules separately.
Adult Ice Dance
Adult Pattern Dance, Rhythm Dance and Free Dance requirements can differ by season, competition and national federation. ADEPIC does not hard-code a universal Adult BPM table. Only display a BPM requirement after the current season’s source has been verified.
Ice Dance rules by country
For international Junior and Senior Ice Dance, the current ISU seasonal rules apply internationally. Your nationality does not create a different Junior/Senior ISU tempo.
National federation rules become particularly important for:
- domestic competition
- lower levels
- national Pattern Dance categories
- Solo Ice Dance
- Adult Ice Dance
- qualification events
